Where is Pécs?

Located in the southwestern part of Hungary, near the Croatian border, Pécs is the country's fifth-largest city. Nestled at the foot of the Mecsek Mountains, it is a stunning UNESCO World Heritage site known for its Mediterranean microclimate, 2,000-year-old history, and vibrant university atmosphere.

Travel by Plane

Pécs does not have an active international commercial airport. Most international visitors fly into Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD), distance is cca 220 km from Pécs.

Direct airport shuttle

The most convenient "door-to-door" service. Different companies provide shared or private transfers directly to your hotel.

Public transport

Take the 100E Airport Express bus to Deák Ferenc tér, then transfer to the Metro (M3 then M2) to reach Déli or Kelenföld train stations to reach Pécs by train.

Travel by Train

InterCity (IC) trains run every two hours from Budapest to Pécs. The journey is comfortable and offers scenic views of the Hungarian countryside.

Departure Stations: Budapest-Keleti or Budapest-Kelenföld.
Duration: Approximately 2.5 to 3 hours.
Estimated Cost: A second-class one-way ticket with a seat reservation costs roughly €10 – €15 (4,000 – 6,000 HUF).
Booking: You can purchase tickets online or via the MÁV app.

Travel by car

Pécs is easily accessible via the modern M6 motorway, which connects the city directly to Budapest.

Duration: About 2 hours from Budapest.

Highway Toll: To use the M6, you must purchase an e-vignette (e-matrica). You can buy this at gas stations or online. A 10-day vignette for a passenger car costs approximately €16 (6,400 HUF).

Local Public Transportation

Pécs has an extensive and reliable bus network operated by Tüke Busz. The city center is largely walkable, but buses are ideal for reaching the University districts or the foothills of the Mecsek.

Tickets: You can buy single tickets from the driver, at kiosks, or more conveniently via the "Mobiljegy" or "MÁV" apps.

Validation: Tickets must be validated immediately upon boarding using the machines near the doors.

Taxis

Taxis in Pécs are reliable and regulated. It is always better to call a taxi or use an app rather than hailing one on the street.

Companies: Főtaxi Pécs and Volán Taxi are the primary providers. The Bolt app also operates in the city.

Fares: The base fee is roughly 890 HUF, with a kilometer charge of approx. 460 HUF. Most taxis accept credit cards.

Car Parking

Pécs uses a zoned parking system. The historical city center is a restricted "Permit Only" zone where driving is only allowed with special authorization. Check with your hotel regarding onsite parking availability.

Street Parking Zones

If you park on the street, check the signs for the zone code. Parking is generally payable Monday–Friday (08:00–18:00) and Saturday (08:00–13:00). Sundays are usually free. Zone 1 (City Center periphery): ~600 HUF/hour, Zone 2: ~320 HUF/hour
